Is
access to your home barrier free? Is at least one entrance at ground
level?
 How
about door width? Lighting? Easy to operate door hardware? This
remodeled kitchen is designed for universal access.

It
could be safely and comfortably used by anyone regardless of their age,
size, shape, or physical ability.
-
There is space under the
sink and range for a stool or chair.
-
The kick plate under the
floor cabinet is 8” for wheel chair clearance.
-
The dishwasher and microwave are placed mid height for better access.
-
The countertop and wall
cabinets are lowered for greater access.
-
There is good task
lighting in all work areas.
Contrasting colors can be used on the front
edge of counters for greater visibility as shown here. Also,
different counter heights can
be used for different people and different tasks.

Loop handles can
be installed on
all appliances and cabinetry for ease of grasping.

Here
is a shower built without
a curb or threshold to cross. Note the attractive grab bars; grab
bars do not have to be ugly.

Here
is a simpler solution to the curb and threshold problem.

Before
After
A
stainless steel false bottom is inserted in the shower and a small ramp
provides access.
Are
all faucets equipped with an anti-scald device and do they all have
lever-type handles?

Are
floor coverings at the same level throughout the house or if there is a
slight difference in height is there a beveled transition piece?

How
about the gardener of the house? Are there raised planters that can
be tended without bending?

These
are some of the real world designs that have added to the
enjoyment of peoples lives.
